An event sponsored by Kravet and the American Society of Interior Design (ASID). Teams of two were challenged to create a digitally printed upholstery textile with a pattern based on a provided country and its culture. Our assigned region was India. India's textiles are largely based on embroidery; a hand-stitched embellishment. This craftsmanship became our inspiration, creating an abstract interruption of stitches and threads. The white asymmetrical diamond grid portrays a stitch, while the blue ombre horizontal pattern represents a thread which holds the textile together
An event sponsored by Kravet and the American Society of Interior Design (ASID). The competition challenged teams to create a digitally printed upholstery textile, with a pattern based on an art time period. Our assigned period was Beaux Art. A classic characteristic of this period is its ornate ceiling pattern. Our interpretation of this feature joins linear and circular symmetries in a neutral-tonal pattern.
The luxury candy store Sugarfina partnered with Iron Design to operate a one-day challenge. The challenge was to design a fixture to display products from their collaboration with Kiva, a charity whose mission is to celebrate and support people looking to create a better future for themselves, their families, and communities. The founder explained, “Kiva is about realizing small actions in the present moment…” This quote in conjunction with imagery provided of a woman crafting handmade goods on a loom inspired our design.
The notion of individual threads on a loom which together forms an item, that ultimately build a business, provided the building blocks for the fixture design. Threads taking form as an arching sunburst at the top highlight the Kiva collaboration. Horizontal dowels, wrapped in an ombre thread, support and complete the winning feature.
